10 West is a medical surgical unit dedicated to our geriatric patients. Our nurses promote functional mobility for the elderly and assist our patients as they transition home or to skilled‑care facilities. Responsibilities
  • Consistently deliver the best in care and customer service, demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy with patients, families, visitors, and colleagues.
  • Assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and individualized care for patients of all ages.
  • Utilize delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team‑oriented collaborative approach.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimum outcomes for all ages in the service area.
  • Complete age‑specific admission and ongoing assessments; document and use them to develop a plan of care.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team, patients, and families to develop, implement, and evaluate an age‑specific interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Revise the plan based on changes in patient status.
  • Accurately administer and document treatments and medications for all ages using automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
  • Identify, incorporate, and document patient/family educational needs in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
  • Act as a patient advocate, protector of patient rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
  • Operate within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support evidence‑based quality patient care and performance improvement.
  • Exhibit clinical expertise amid rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Plan strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, and resource consumption while improving patient outcomes.
  • Serve as a role model for clinical practice to coworkers, students, and physicians.
  • Manage resources, establish priorities, and modify the environment to meet patient care needs.
  • Complete manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frames and guidelines.
  • Use problem‑solving methods to resolve patient and personnel situations that arise in the work area.
  • Take an active role in orienting new employees.
  • Provide feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
  • Offer input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating on unit, hospital, and system activities to facilitate staff decision‑making.
  • Assist with educational activities for the unit/department.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of a professional nursing school or an approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
  • In possession of AHA BLS‑HCP. May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP based on the specific unit.
  • Computer skills required for electronic medical records (EPIC).
