Summary / Objective

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) plays a critical role in providing superior customer service and nursing services to all residents. The ADON assists the Director of Nursing (DON) in planning, developing, and operating the nursing department, ensuring residents receive quality care 24 hours a day.

Essential Functions

Assist the DON with planning, directing, and supervising nursing staff activities.

Ensure the nursing department complies with federal, state, and local regulations.

Develop, implement, and update department policies and procedures.

Assist with staffing to meet resident needs and regulatory requirements.

Participate in federal, state, and local agency annual surveys.

Review deficiencies noted by government agencies during inspections and implement needed changes.

Complete annual performance reviews of all subordinate staff and provide guidance and education.

Provide counseling and disciplinary action to subordinate staff as needed.

Train and educate staff members.

Maintain infection control and standard precaution practices, following safety precautions.

Report hazardous conditions, damaged equipment, and supply issues to appropriate persons.

Maintain residents' comfort, privacy, and dignity; interact warmly and respectfully.

Answer and respond to call lights promptly and courteously.

Assist admissions, re‑admissions, and transfer of residents to different rooms.

Communicate effectively and tactfully with residents, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.

Attend and participate in departmental meetings and in‑services.

Supervisory Responsibility

The ADON directly supervises all nursing staff, including RN, LPN, and CNA.

Required

Education and Experience

Associate’s Degree in Science, Nursing, or related field.
Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
Current State License as Registered Nurse.
CPR Certified.
At least 2 years RN experience.

Preferred

Education and Experience

5 years RN experience.
Previous experience managing a nursing department.

Additional Preferred Eligibility Qualifications

Knowledge of Joint Commission procedures.
Knowledge of IDPH regulations.
