Overview

The Vascular Clinical Nurse Specialist provides direct/indirect specialized, comprehensive care, emphasizing health promotion, disease prevention, and collaborative management strategies. Participates in clinical, educational, leadership, consultant, and research activities of the service area. Provides leadership in development and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards of practice. Provides 24×7 support for nursing and targeted patient populations.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge and analysis of nursing practice issues related to clinical specialty. Provides consultation within area of expertise to health care team regarding complex patient care needs.
  • Provides direct and indirect expert patient/family care for patients of all ages with unique or complex needs, including highly complex assessment, care planning, treatment, and discharge/transition planning.
  • Develops and evaluates standards of practice in specialty area based on evidence and best practice.
  • Develops evidence‑based clinical interventions and systems to achieve defined patient and system outcomes.
  • Coordinates care of patients using system and community resources to ensure successful health/illness/wellness transitions, enhance delivery of care, and achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Leads the design, implementation, and evaluation of quality improvement and innovations at the unit and system levels.
  • Demonstrates commitment to the philosophy and goals of Carilion Clinic and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration to implement outcome‑focused patient care needs.
  • Establishes and implements goals related to nursing practice, participates in decision‑making processes at all levels, and identifies opportunities to enhance clinical practice of staff.
  • Provides leadership regarding evidence‑based nursing practice, integrates research into establishing patient care standards, guidelines, and protocols, and disseminates findings through in‑services, unit councils and shared governance groups.
  • Mentors nurses to acquire new skills, clinical judgment, and effectively incorporate evidence into practice.
  • Provides education for patients/families, the health care team, and the community, and participates in community service organizations on healthcare issues.
Job Scope

Interacts frequently with nursing staff, physicians, students and other members of the health care team to coordinate care. Maintains patient, staff and customer confidentiality. Provides accessibility throughout the system and in the community as a resource person. Moderate risk of exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous materials and combative patients; high risk, stressful environment due to demands on time from multiple sources and need to shift priorities frequently.

The individual must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including understanding of growth and development through the life span, assessment of patient status, and implementation of care as described in departmental policies and procedures.

Requirements

Education: Master’s degree in nursing required.

Experience: Two years of nursing experience in Vascular preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Current nursing licensure and specialty certification. Must be registered as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the State of Virginia or obtain it within 6 months of hire. Additional certification(s) specific to a business unit may be required.

Life Support: AHA BLS‑HCP required.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, presentation skills, and ability to think globally and communicate a vision.
