Overview

The 5 West Unit is a 26‑bed medical‑surgical unit specializing in the treatment and recovery of patients with complex intravenous drug‑related infections. The unit, often called “The Hope Unit,” is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of therapists, physicians, peer recovery specialists, psychiatric technicians, and other professionals dedicated to helping patients who have lost hope for the future. This role supports the unit’s mission by providing nursing care, assistance with activities of daily living, and patient advocacy.

Responsibilities
  • Provide basic nursing care and advanced technical skills for specified age groups, documenting observations and reporting to licensed staff.
  • Assist patients with blood pressure, oxygen levels, temperature, bathing, meals, toileting, ambulation, and other basic needs.
  • Transport patients, supplies, specimens, and equipment within the facility.
  • Contribute to performance improvement activities and participate in obtaining desired service line outcomes.
  • Assist with electronic medical record (EMR) audits and shared governance activities.
  • Lead unit huddles and participate in interdepartmental patient rounds (IDRs).
  • Support staff scheduling, including coverage for lunch assignments.
  • Monitor unit cleanliness, perform safety rounds, and maintain regulatory compliance (e.g., refrigerator, glucose meters, code cart checks).
  • Provide customer service, answer phones, and make meaningful connections with patients, visitors, and physicians.
  • Manage admission, transfer, and discharge processes, ensuring a positive patient experience and accurate documentation.
  • Assist with phlebotomy, non‑sterile wound care, saline lock removal, and colostomy bag changes when competent.
  • Participate in the sitter process when appropriate.
  • May be required to sit with patients on suicide precautions or receiver of special protective equipment.
Job Scope

May support multiple nursing units and interact with unit staff, patients, physicians, families, visitors, management, and ancillary departments. Requires discretion, confidentiality, and the ability to handle fast‑paced environments, potentially involving infectious diseases, biohazardous and hazardous materials, and combat situations.

Qualifications
  • High‑school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous direct patient care experience preferred.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant preferred; required in critical‑access facilities.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (AHA BLS‑HCP) required within six months of hire.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Must complete orientation and competency validation; attend required orientation classes during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. for the first two weeks.
  • Ability to perform tasks in a fast‑paced environment and adhere to safety protocols.
Compensation

Pay range: $17.39 – $24.35 per hour. Employee pay is based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The range does not include benefits or pension plan.
