Overview

8 WPCU – The Enhanced Monitoring Unit is a 27‑bed specialty step‑down environment focused on gastrointestinal (GI) and pulmonary care. Our patients require comprehensive monitoring and interventions that bridge the gap between intensive care and acute medical‑surgical nursing. With a focus on innovation and teamwork, the Enhanced Monitoring Unit provides nurses with a unique opportunity to expand their knowledge, grow professionally, and make a meaningful impact on patient outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Provides basic nursing care and performs technical skills for specified age groups according to established standards.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living.
  • Documents and reports patient observations to licensed staff.
  • Transports patients, supplies, specimens, equipment within the facility.
  • Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
  • Actively participates in obtaining desired service line/departmental outcomes.
  • Assists with chart audits and participates in unit quality activities.
  • Participates in unit activities and/or organization councils/committees.
  • May lead unit huddle and participate in IDR’s (unit based interdepartmental patient rounds).
  • Provides support for department/unit staff scheduling, including covering lunch assignments.
  • Reviews medical record for outstanding orders and notifies nurses of stat orders and medication changes.
  • Orders department/unit supplies and equipment, and stocks/organizes supplies.
  • Assists with way finding, answering phones, and making meaningful connections with patients and visitors.
  • Processes equipment between patients as needed (cleans unit‑based equipment and gathers supplies needed to operate equipment).
  • Operates and maintains general office equipment.
  • Leads streamlined, timely and comprehensive admission, transfer, and discharge processes, keeping the patient experience as the top focus.
  • Assists in coordination of patient flow into/out of area using department/unit specific software and Intranet.
  • Is aware of unit outcomes and metrics and promotes process improvement initiatives that add value to outcomes and/or organizational mission.
  • Welcomes and assists patients and visitors; assists with registration.
  • Serves as the “face” of the unit, role‑modeling service excellence behaviors at all times.
  • Answers phones and interacts with patients, visitors, physicians, and other health professionals.
  • Receives and screens incoming calls via telephone and patient call system.
  • Routes calls to appropriate individuals and takes messages accurately.
  • Monitors cleanliness of waiting and break rooms and performs safety/environmental rounds on unit with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Participates in the sitter process (if competencies appropriate).
  • Assists with maintaining regulatory compliance.
  • May be responsible for phlebotomy (competency appropriate).
  • May conduct non‑sterile wound care dressings (competency appropriate).
  • May replace and remove saline locks (competency appropriate).
  • May do colostomy bag changes (competency appropriate).
Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience:

    None.
  • Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration:
    If working in a critical access facility, a Certified Nursing Assistant is required.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills required.
  • Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for the position.
Compensation

Compensation Range: $17.39 - $24.35 per hour. Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
