Unit Overview

The Enhanced Monitoring Unit is a 27-bed specialty step‑down environment focused on gastrointestinal (GI) and pulmonary care. Our patients require comprehensive monitoring and interventions that bridge the gap between intensive care and acute medical‑surgical nursing. The unit provides nurses with a unique opportunity to expand knowledge, grow professionally, and make a meaningful impact on patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and provision of individualized care for patients of all ages.
  • Use delegation and critical‑thinking skills to provide quality service within a team‑oriented, collaborative approach to patient care.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimum outcomes; complete age‑specific assessments and develop individualized plans of care.
  • Collaborate with the health‑care team, patients, and families to develop, implement, and evaluate an interdisciplinary plan of care; revise plan according to changes in patient status.
  • Accurately administer and document treatments and medications for all ages using electronic medical record (EPIC) systems.
  • Identify, incorporate, and document patient/family education needs in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to Carilion Clinic’s performance‑improvement activities; act as patient advocate and protector of patient rights.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development to provide appropriate care for patients served.
  • Participate in clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support evidence‑based, quality patient‑care services and performance improvement.
  • Plan strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, and resource consumption while improving patient outcomes.
  • Serve as a role model for clinical practice; mentor students and physicians.
  • Manage resources, prioritize needs, and modify the environment to meet patient‑care demands.
  • Complete manager/director predetermined projects within specified timelines and guidelines.
  • Use problem‑solving methods to facilitate resolution of patient and personnel situations.
  • Assist in orientation of new employees and provide feedback using appropriate communication and documentation.
  • Participate in unit, hospital, and system activities to support staff participation in decision making; assist with education activities for the unit/department.

Qualifications and Licensure
  • Education:

    Graduate of a school of professional nursing from an accredited college or graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    Currently licensed as Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
  • Life Support: AHA BLS‑HCP required; may need BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.
  • Computer skills:
    Proficient in using electronic medical records (EPIC).
