Title:
Lactation Consultant - RN (Open)
As part of the health care team, assumes primary accountability for the coordination and provision of individualized lactation care for patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Utilizes delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team‑oriented, collaborative approach to patient care.
Responsibilities- Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates breastfeeding in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for mother/infant dyads as appropriate to the service area.
- Ensures complete, accurate and timely documentation of care.
- Collaborates with members of the health care team, patient, and family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age‑specific interdisciplinary plan of care.
- Revises plan according to changes in patient status.
- Identifies patient/family educational needs in a timely manner, incorporates them into the plan of care, implements, and documents appropriate actions.
- Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patients' rights, and provider of psychological, social, and cultural support.
- Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
- Uses and cares for breastfeeding equipment and devices appropriately.
- Completes appropriate activities related to the rental or sale of all items in the Lactation Retail Center.
- Maintains professional conduct and practices in an ethical manner, accountable for professional actions and legal responsibilities.
- Adheres to the Standards of Practice and the IBLCE Code of Ethics.
- Maintains and expands knowledge and skills by participating in continuing education activities.
- Obtains certification no later than two years after employment and maintains current IBCLC status.
- Determines and performs within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support evidence‑based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.
- Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
- Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption, and improve patient outcomes.
- Functions as a role‑model for clinical practice to coworkers, students, and physicians.
- Manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies the environment to meet patient care needs.
- Completely executes manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frames and according to pre-established guidelines.
- Uses problem‑solving methods to facilitate resolution of patient and personnel situations presented in the work area.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree preferred. - Experience:
One year maternal/child experience in an acute care setting in which lactation skills were utilized is required; three years preferred. - Licensure/Certification: RN required; IBCLC required within the first 12 months of hire.
- Must successfully complete orientation and competency requirements.
- Must obtain and maintain CPR certification.
- Must be able to meet essential job functions.
$36.87 – $55.31 per hour. Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
