Sign on Bonus Eligible. A 25-bed unit physicians and residents providing learning opportunities. 8 South PCU specializes in the care of acutely and chronically ill adults with complex medical diagnoses.

As a registered nurse, you are expected to consistently deliver the best in care and customer service, and demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with our patients, their families, visitors, and with each other.

As part of the health care team, RNs assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and provision of individualized care for patients of all ages. The registered nurse also utilizes delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team-oriented, collaborative approach to patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area
  • Complete age-specific admission and ongoing assessments, documented and used to develop a plan of care
  • Collaborate with members of the health care team, patients and families to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care, revising plan according to changes in patient status
  • Accurately administer and document treatments and medications for patients of all ages utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records
  • Identify and address patient/family (caregiver) educational needs timely, incorporating into the plan of care, implemented and documented appropriately
  • Contribute to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities
  • Demonstrate role of patient advocate, protector of patient’s rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served
  • Support evidence-based, quality patient care service and performance improvement through direct/indirect pathways
  • Exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances
  • Plan strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption and improve patient outcomes
  • Model clinical practice for coworkers, students, and physicians
  • Manage resources, establish priorities and modify environment to meet patient care needs
  • Complete manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frame and according to pre-established guidelines
  • Use problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution of patient and personnel situations
  • Take an active role in the orientation of new employees
  • Provide feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation
  • Participate in unit, hospital, and/or system activities that facilitate staff participation/input in decision making
  • Assist with education activities for unit/department
What We Require
  • Education: Graduate of a professional nursing school from an accredited college or approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
  • Licensure/Certification: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
  • Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required. May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.
  • Other: Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).
