American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Surgical PCU position requiring ventilator care experience and an active VA or Compact RN license.
Details- >down unit functioning as a step-down from the General Surgical ICU with bariatric specialty and trauma unit backup
- Night shift schedule of 4x12 hours from 6:45pm to 7:15am
- Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week scheduling block
- Typical patient ratio of 1:5 with a staffing goal of 1:4
- Unit includes 2 beds for chronic trach patients requiring ventilator care
- Uses ortho equipment, chest tubes, surgical drains, trach, endo tools, PICC lines, and MML
- Manages cardiac IV drips including Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, and Ketamine
- Remote telemetry monitoring with tele sitting used to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
- Requires EPIC charting experience
- Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Floating required within skillset across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units
- Facility may call off up to 1 shift per 2-week period

- Active RN license (Virginia State or Compact) required, with pending license accepted only for candidates holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 1 year of charge nurse experience, preferably at a 250+ bed hospital or larger facility
- Strong experience with post-operative patients required
- Ventilator care experience for chronic trach patients required
- EPIC charting experience required
- Skilled in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, and emergency response
- Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
- Experience managing cardiac drips without titration
- Experience with respiratory support including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, CPAP, and BiPAP
- Experience with isolation precautions and PPE use
- First-time travelers considered if candidate has strong experience at a similar facility
- Provide direct patient care in a stepdown unit supporting surgical, bariatric, and trauma patient populations
- Participate in Rapid Response and Code team activation as needed
- Work at a Level I Trauma Center that is Magnet-designated and affiliated as a teaching hospital with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
- Local candidates accepted, with radius-based eligibility rules applying to bill rate and assignment extension options
- Previous employees (per diem or permanent) must have a minimum one-year separation before returning as a traveler
- Travelers who have worked 365 days on assignment are not eligible to return, with exceptions reviewed case-by-case by facility leadership
- All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted in advance
- Winter holiday coverage requires working 2 holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas/Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve/New Year's Day)
