RN – Neuro ICU position in a 12-bed ICU that specializes in non-traumatic brain injuries and other diagnoses including ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, seizure disorders, brain tumor/cancer, and neuromuscular conditions. The unit also serves as the alternative unit for neurosurgery patients. The RN is expected to deliver high-quality nursing care and customer service with respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy for patients, families, visitors, and colleagues.
The RN assumes primary accountability for nursing coordination and provision of individualized care for patients of all ages, using delegation and critical thinking within a team-oriented, collaborative approach. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care to achieve optimum outcomes, age-specific admission and ongoing assessments, and collaborative development of an interdisciplinary plan of care. Treatments and medications are administered and documented using electronic medical records and other automated systems.
Patient/family education needs are identified and incorporated into the plan of care. The RN contributes to performance improvement activities and acts as a patient advocate and provider of psychosocial/cultural support. The role also includes applying growth and development knowledge to care, guiding evidence-based practice, and supporting improvement in length of stay, turnaround time, and resource use. The RN may serve as a role model, manage resources, and participate in orientation and education of staff.
- Deliver individualized nursing care for patients of all ages in the Neuro ICU, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Perform age-specific admissions and ongoing assessments; revise the care plan as patient status changes.
- Collaborate with the health care team, patients, and families to develop and evaluate age-specific interdisciplinary care plans.
- Administer and document treatments and medications using electronic medical records (EPIC) and other systems.
- Identify and document patient/family education needs; implement and document education accordingly.
- Contribute to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities and advocate for patients’ rights and psychosocial support.
- Apply growth and development knowledge to patient care and participate in clinical, leadership, or education pathways to support evidence-based practice and quality improvement.
- Model clinical practice for coworkers, students, and physicians; manage resources and adjust the care environment to meet patient needs.
- Complete manager/director predetermined projects within established deadlines and participate in staff orientation and education.
- Education:
Graduate of a professional nursing program from an accredited college or program; eligible to sit for the Virginia licensure exam. - Licensure/Certification:
Current Virginia RN licensure or eligible to obtain licensure. - Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required; may be required to obtain/maintain ACLS, PALS, NRP depending on the work unit.
- Computer skills:
Proficiency with electronic medical records (EPIC).
- Compensation Range: $33.52 – $50.28 hourly; based on qualifications, credentials, education, and experience.
