American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Surgical PCU/Stepdown night shift position requiring ventilator care experience and an active VA or compact RN license.
Requirements- Active VA state or compact RN license required; single-state license from a non-compact state may be accepted pending licensure
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
- Prior charge nurse experience preferred
- Ventilator care experience required for chronic trach patients
- Experience with cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, and emergency response required
- Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care required
- EPIC charting experience required
- Works in the Surgical PCU/Stepdown unit of a large acute care teaching hospital
- Functions as a stepdown unit from the General Surgical ICU, with bariatric specialty and backup support to the trauma unit
- Unit includes 2 beds for chronic trach patients (non-ICU level)
- Typical patient ratio is 1:5 with a staffing goal of 1:4
- Utilizes remote telemetry monitoring with tele-sitting support from Patient Care Techs
- Manages equipment including ortho equipment, chest tubes, surgical drains, trach, endo tool, PICC lines, and MML
- Manages cardiac drips including Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, and Ketamine (no titration)
- Provides respiratory support including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, CPAP, and BiPAP
- Night shift schedule of 4x12 hours, 6:45pm-7:15am
- Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week scheduling block
- Floating required within skillset across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units
- Requires EPIC charting experience
- Provide stepdown-level nursing care to surgical, bariatric, and trauma backup patients
- Activate Rapid Response and Code teams as needed
- Follow isolation precautions and PPE protocols
- Facility may call off up to 1 shift per 2-week period
- Must work 1 holiday per 13-week contract, with 2 holidays required during winter holiday periods (Thanksgiving, Christmas/Christmas Eve, NYE/New Year's)
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Local candidates are accepted; radius rules apply and may affect eligibility, assignment length, and bill rate based on distance from the facility
- Previous employees (per diem or permanent) must have a minimum one-year gap before returning as a traveler
- Travelers who have worked 365 days on assignment are not eligible to return, with exceptions reviewed case-by-case by facility leadership
- Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center, Magnet-designated, and a teaching hospital affiliated with a medical school
- All RTO and scheduling requests must be submitted in advance
