This is a unique opportunity for a PMHNP who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and wants to make a meaningful impact on both patient care and the way behavioral health services are delivered in the emergency setting.

About

the Role

The Emergency Psychiatry APP provides psychiatric evaluation and management for patients with a wide range of behavioral health and medical needs. Patient populations may include individuals experiencing:

  • Suicidal ideation or self-harming behaviors
  • Mood and psychotic disorders
  • Intoxication and substance withdrawal
  • Delirium and dementia
  • Difficulty coping with acute or chronic illness
  • Behavioral crises and other complex psychiatric presentations

You will provide care within our Level I Trauma Center Emergency Department as well as support emergency departments throughout the Carilion system.

More Than a Traditional Clinical Role

This position combines direct patient care, psychiatric consultation, staff education, crisis intervention, and quality improvement. The PMHNP will take a proactive and engaged approach to improving the care and safety of behavioral health patients in the emergency setting.

Responsibilities include:
  • Conducting psychiatric evaluations and developing treatment recommendations.
  • Providing psychiatric medication management when appropriate.
  • Responding to behavioral health emergencies and assisting with crisis stabilization.
  • Supporting efforts to reduce the use of restraints through early intervention and de-escalation strategies.
  • Evaluating and supporting patients who screen positive for specific behavioral health concerns, including suicidal ideation and trauma-related symptoms.
  • Developing and implementing individualized behavioral plans.
  • Providing real-time, "just-in-time" education and training for emergency department staff.
  • Serving as a clinical resource for de-escalation, crisis mitigation, and early identification of behavioral health needs.
  • Participating in initiatives designed to improve quality, safety, and the patient experience.
A Highly Collaborative Environment

You won’t do this work alone. You'll be part of a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, physicians, social workers, therapists, peer recovery specialists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The position also works closely with Carilion’s dedicated Emergency Psychiatry Program and Addiction Medicine team, providing an integrated approach for patients with complex psychiatric, medical, and substance-use needs.

Schedule

Primarily daytime hours Weekends as needed Holidays rotated equitably among team members
