Overview

Full‑time position working the night shift with every other weekend and rotating holidays. Employment Status:
Full time;
Shift: Evening/Night (United States of America);
Facility: 1906 Belleview Ave SE - Roanoke CP01 Carilion Medical Center.

The Patient Care Technician performs basic clerical and technical clinical services related to the care, cleanliness, safety, and comfort of patients. The 20‑bed PCU specializes in Neuro/Trauma surgery and serves as the secondary stroke unit for hemorrhagic stroke patients. Four beds are dedicated to an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and two to Chronic Ventilator patients.

Sign‑On Bonus

A $7,500 sign‑on bonus is available when an external candidate meets applicable guidelines.

Responsibilities
  • Provides basic nursing care and performs technical skills for specified age groups according to established standards; assists patients with activities of daily living.
  • Documents and reports patient observations to licensed staff.
  • Transports patients, supplies, specimens, and equipment within the facility.
  • Contributes to Carilion Clinic's performance improvement activities and actively participates in obtaining desired service line/departmental outcomes.
  • Assists with chart audits.
  • Participates in unit quality activities.
  • Actively participates in unit activities and/or organization councils and committees.
  • Might lead unit huddle; participate in unit-based interdepartmental patient rounds (IDRs).
  • Provides support for department/unit staff scheduling, including covering lunch assignments.
  • Reviews medical records for outstanding orders and notifies nurse of stat orders and medication changes.
  • Orders department/unit supplies and equipment and stocks/organizes supplies.
  • Assists with way finding, answers phones, and makes meaningful connections with patients and visitors.
  • Processes equipment between patients as needed (cleans unit‑based equipment and gathers supplies necessary for operation).
  • Operates and maintains general office equipment.
  • Leads streamlined, timely, and comprehensive admission, transfer, and discharge processes with the patient experience as the top focus.
  • Assists in coordination of patient flow into and out of the area using department/unit specific software and intranet; promotes process‐improvement initiatives that add value to outcomes and/or the organizational mission.
  • Welcomes and assists patients and visitors; assists with registration; serves as “face” of the unit and models service‑excellence behaviors at all times.
  • Answers phones and interacts with patients, visitors, physicians, and other health professionals; receives, screens, and routes incoming calls accurately.
  • Monitors cleanliness of waiting and break rooms, performs safety/environmental rounds on the unit with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Participates in the sitter process (if competency appropriate).
  • Assists with maintaining regulatory compliance (refrigerator, glucose meters, equipment room storage, code cart checks as assigned, etc.).
  • Might be responsible for phlebotomy (competency appropriate).
  • Might conduct nonsterile wound care dressings (competency appropriate).
  • Might replace and remove saline locks (competency appropriate).
  • Might change colostomy bags (competency appropriate).
Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience:

    None.
  • Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration:
    If the employee works in a critical access facility, a Certified Nursing Assistant credential is required.
  • Other

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills; must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for the position.
