Job Description
The Halassa Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion is seeking a part‑time Research Technician. Led by Dr. Michael Halassa, the lab uses controlled behavioral tasks alongside physiological, genetic, and optical techniques to investigate the brain circuits that support cognitive function. They focus on thalamocortical networks and how they contribute to attention, executive control, and decision‑making. The goal of our lab is to develop a computational framework for understanding the cognitive thalamus.
The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills and be comfortable joining a dynamic research lab. Prior laboratory experience is helpful but not required. The position involves working with mice, so a fundamental interest in mouse models and behavior is essential. Techniques in the lab include in vivo electrophysiology, neuroanatomy, optogenetics, and computational approaches. Basic computer skills, accurate record‑keeping, and experience with data collection are required, as well as the ability to manage electronic and paper data, perform basic analyses, and assist with figure preparation for publications and presentations.
Familiarity with the lab’s core techniques is a plus. The candidate should be collaborative, detail‑oriented, and adaptable to different research tasks.
- Must be an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills
- Must have basic lab experience including dilutions, weighing chemicals, and understanding proper chemical handling
- Must be able to work independently and manage time effectively
- Must be detail oriented
- Must be comfortable with computer software
- Must be able to sit or stand a lab bench for extended periods of time
- Demonstrated interpersonal, analytical and problem‑solving skills with strong attention to detail
- Although extensive prior experience with rodents is not required, candidate must be comfortable learning how to handle rodents and perform surgeries
- Must have a demonstrated ability to interact respectfully and comfortably with all individuals
- Coursework or training in Biology, Bioengineering, Neuroscience or a related field
- General laboratory experience
- Coding experience
- Interest in advancing neuroscience through dedicated repeat‑experiments
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational and team skills.
- Demonstrated ability to follow instructions
- Previous research experience
