Carilion Clinic is seeking two medical physicists to support proton therapy in its new, state‑of‑the‑art Cancer Center. The Taubman Cancer Center will house two Varian True Beam LINACs, a Cyber Knife, an HDR unit, a Siemens CTSim, and a Mevion 250i proton therapy unit. The positions focus on leading the proton unit’s commissioning, quality assurance (QA), and daily treatments. One role will serve as lead, while the other provides support to the lead proton physicist.
Responsibilities- Lead and perform commissioning of the proton therapy unit and associated software.
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive QA programs for proton therapy equipment and Linacs.
- Conduct daily QA and provide clinical support for proton treatments.
- Support the Radiation Oncology Department and collaborate with three associated physicians.
- Assist with multidisciplinary programs such as Y90 infusions, Gamma Tile implants, and theranostics initiatives.
- Maintain radiation safety standards across the hospital system.
- Mentor junior physicists and provide guidance on complex clinical issues.
- Contribute to quality improvement, research projects, and educational programs.
- Education: Master’s or Doctoral degree in Radiological Physics or a closely related field.
- Experience: Prior related experience is required; for therapeutic physicists, independent annual and monthly linac QA and RAM license listing as an Authorized Medical Physicist.
- Licensure, Certification, Registration: Certification by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Physics, Therapeutic Physics, or Physics of Nuclear Medicine (or equivalent).

Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities; ability to exercise independent judgment in complex clinical and regulatory situations; and ability to mentor and support junior staff.
Salary Range: $ – $ (based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience). The range does not include benefits or pension plan.
