Position: Environmental Technician Assc/ Technician

Job Summary

Under close supervision and oversight, the Environmental Technician Associate is responsible for the performance of environmental inspections, data management, and reporting requirements to comply with environmental compliance programs, permit requirements, and corporate environmental policies, standards, procedures and strategic environmental goals within their assigned region, plant and project scope. Responsibilities include performance of inspections, collection of data, and the development of reports to demonstrate compliance with applicable requirements at multiple AEP assets within the assigned region within regulatory time frames.

The Environmental Technician is also responsible for informing appropriate AEP staff of issues identified during inspections that must be addressed through internal business processes.

Job Location

* This position can be located at any office within the Appalachian Power footprint in the state of Virginia.

Key competencies of this position are technical expertise, planning and organization ability, attention to detail, written and oral communication skills and initiative.

Essential Job Functions & Tasks
  • Perform environmental inspections under close supervision within the assigned region using AEP approved forms and methods within regulatory time frames.
  • Communicate deviations appropriately.
  • Collect data as needed to support environmental compliance reporting using AEP approved methods.
  • Prepare and submit reports as assigned.
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices to safeguard employees, contractors, the general public, and Company facilities.
  • Provide support during environmental compliance reviews.
  • Effectively communicate environmental compliance issues to appropriate internal parties.
  • Maintain all environmental documents and records in accordance with environmental content management standards.
  • Perform safe driving techniques and practices while traveling from one AEP asset to another.
Basic Qualifications

Environmental Technician Associate (Grade
4):

  • Experience:

    Entry level; no experience required, but preferred.
  • Licenses/Certifications:

    Highly Preferred – experience in Coal Combustion Residual Surface Impoundments and Landfills and Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Physical demand:
    Light duty.
  • Travel: 90% within the assigned region, may include overnight stays on occasion.

Environmental Technician (Grade
5):

  • Experience:

    Minimum of three years environmental experience with an associate’s degree; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Licenses/Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license.
  • Physical demand:
    Light duty.
  • Travel: 90% within the assigned region, may include overnight stays on occasion.
  • Availability:
    Weekend on call coverage to assist in managing environmental needs (on rare occasions only).
Compensation

Environmental Technician Associate (Grade
4) – $55,747 - $64,323

Environmental Technician (Grade
5) – $65,474 - $75,546

Physical Demand

Light Work:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 to 12 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 5-6 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) When it requires walking or standing to a significant degree;
