SUMMARY OF JOB
Performs unskilled/skilled work in the repairs, maintenance, construction, and installation of water and sewer lines and facilities, maintaining water and sanitary sewer service to customers. Performs duties of UCT I and II as needed. Operates dump truck, rubber‑tired backhoe, mini‑excavator, skid‑steer, and loader. Performs general laboring tasks, installs and repairs water and sewer pipe and fittings without supervision, services equipment, trains crew members, inspects equipment for safety, and maintains accurate log sheets and other required records.
Must work varied shifts including standby and emergency hours and may be required to work overtime or extended hours. Requires high school graduation or GED, preferred experience, Class A commercial driver’s license with air‑brake and tanker endorsement, and must pass hands‑on equipment tests administered by division.
- Operate dump truck, rubber‑tired backhoe, mini‑excavator, skid‑steer, and loader in water and sanitary sewer line repair, construction, and sewer maintenance operations.
- Perform general laboring tasks when not operating equipment.
- Make repairs and install water and sanitary sewer lines and pipe fittings.
- Perform troubleshooting and pipe installation tasks.
- Service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Train and instruct crew members in equipment operation and work techniques.
- Inspect equipment for safety and ensure crew has necessary tools and safety supplies.
- Maintain accurate log sheets, checklists, and required records.
- Work varied shifts, including standby and emergency hours.
- May oversee the work of assigned employees.
- Assist responsible supervisor with interviewing, hiring, and training employees.
- Plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward or discipline employees.
- Address complaints and resolve problems.
- May be responsible for crew operation in supervisor’s or crew leader’s absence.
- Oversee assigned work of other personnel.
- Review and recommend improvements in processes and procedures.
- Think logically and comprehend data.
- Work with minimal supervision.
- Work safely and obey all safety rules.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Respond to inquiries from employees and customers orally or in writing.
- Represent assigned area in meetings.

- Maintain good work ethic, attendance, timeliness, and job attitude.

- Perform as primary backhoe operator on a crew.
- Operate sewer wet trucks for standby and emergency calls.
- Successfully complete requirements for UCT Tech III as stated in the Field Operations Supplemental Guidelines.
High school graduation or GED equivalent, plus 0–1 year experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATE, LICENSE, REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS- Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with air‑brake and other endorsements (tanker).
- Valid Virginia driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment date.
- No more than six (6) demerit points on driving record if required to drive Authority vehicles.
- Pass a hands‑on equipment test for rubber‑tired backhoe, loader, mini‑excavator, and skid‑steer, judged by Field Operations management.
