Maintenance Technician II - Construction Technician

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Technician II to serve on the Construction crew in the Stormwater Division. This position performs skilled work with or around the operation of heavy motorized equipment involved with stormwater construction maintenance projects. Equipment used includes various heavy construction equipment, and various hand tools needed to complete assigned tasks. Position responsible for repairs and renovations to stormwater conveyance system including pipes, manholes, and inlets.

Ability to operate a combination sewer cleaner will be required to assist with potholing operations, and will be able to learn through cross training. Individual may assist with pipe cleaning operations. Follows safety regulations related to work area and equipment use. Standby work will include working some nights, holidays and weekends as needed. Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal and assists with special events, and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in storm drain, street maintenance, driving/operating heavy construction equipment and the performance of heavy manual labor; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment. Ability to obtain Tanker Endorsement (N) is preferred but not required.

Completion of other tasks and jobs supporting the division may be assigned.

Performs skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following depending on area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned.

Operates tractor trailer or other heavy construction equipment

Operates street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, backhoe, heavy front-end loader, crane and chipper, large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces and street/construction repair

Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment

When not operating heavy equipment, operates lighter equipment or trains other operators

Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal

Operates truck, including automatic and manual transmission

Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment

May perform inspection of playgrounds and associated equipment

Maintains accurate log sheets, checklists and pre-trip sheets

Performs major and minor cleaning work on storm drain systems

Repairs catch basin boxes with concrete and brick and/or blocks

Performs work in the resurfacing of concrete walkways (floor polishing) in city buildings.

Performs some major and all minor motor repairs and replacement work such as: cleaning and replacing spark plugs, installing radiator hose, and packing water pumps; refacing valves and seats, grinding, assembling, and adjusting them; installing rings and bearings and making proper adjustments; and overhauling/repairing carburetors and clutches, brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, hydraulic system components including pumps and cylinders;

and tuning motors

Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding

Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and…
