Facilities Journeyman - General Maintenance

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Facilities Journeyman that will serve on the Facilities division of the Department of General Services. This position may be requested to handle any of the requests at a Journeyman level that could encompass any of the trades listed below.

Repair or maintain high voltage systems, install various electrical systems, operate a variety of electrical testing devices/equipment to locate and determine what types of electrical malfunction. Required to repair, maintain, and install wiring, motors, transformers, generators, lighting, appliances, circuits, wiring and other electrical system equipment and components in compliance with NEC National Electrical Code and local regulations. Will be provided 18 months to obtain a Virginia State journeyman certification in the trade area assigned (electrical).

Repair, maintain, troubleshoot, and install commercial plumbing systems including HVAC piping systems, rainwater recovery, swimming pool and decorative fountain maintenance. May be required to operate backhoe/skid steer, training will be provided if needed. Will be provided 18 months to obtain a Virginia State journeyman certification in the trade area assigned (plumbing).

May be required to operate backhoe for installation & repair of light utility piping and ability to fit steel pipe systems. Required to fabricate metal objects which may involve, lay out (fitter), cutting, measuring, sheet metal and welding metals to create the desired shape or object. Be knowledgeable of many techniques and tools. Required in all divisions – study plans, drawings, specifications, work orders to determine work requirements and sequence of repairs and/or installations.

Will be provided 18 months to obtain a welding/rigging certification.

Performs skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment.

May include the following depending on area of assignment:

• Discuss job requirements and receive detailed instructions from supervisor, foreman or facilities trades professional
  • Inspect work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions
  • Maintain accurate log sheets and checklists
  • Assist with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights, weekends and holidays, as needed
  • Adhere to established safety procedures
  • Requisition s parts and materials used in the repair of equipment or jobs assigned
  • Inspect equipment for proper safety and ensure truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment (e.g., water cooler, first aid kit, safety flares, etc.)
  • Perform at minimum journeyman-level trades work in one of the following areas: carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and/or welding
  • Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to ensure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law
  • Adhere to sound safety and housekeeping practices
  • Review and follow safety rules/procedures; avoid known hazards in the work environment
  • Place avoidance of injury or property damage above all other job requirements
  • May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties – Pulmonary test will be provided by the city
  • Must be able to climb/work on ladders and/or lifts to reach high ceilings or walls
  • May be required to operate out of a bucket truck, training will be provided if needed
  • May be required to take classes or training to enhance job performance
  • Assist with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights, weekends and holidays, as needed
