Heavy Equipment Mechanic
The City of Roanoke is seeking a Fleet Maintenance Technician III to serve in the Fleet Division of General Services.
As an experienced and self‑motivated technician, you will perform skilled mechanical work on specialized construction and automotive equipment. The ideal candidate will diagnose, repair, adjust, and service a wide variety of medium and heavy equipment, including diesel and gasoline–powered equipment, air compressors, pump apparatus, and aerial‑truck hydraulic systems.
Responsibilities- Overhaul, fabricate, and service mechanical assemblies and accessories such as single and two‑speed rear axles, multi‑speed transmissions, and hydraulic, compressed‑air, vacuum, and electrical control systems.
- Perform maintenance and repairs on tractors, street sweeper trucks, bulldozers, heavy front‑end loaders, cranes, chipper units, excavators, and large motor graders for street and construction repair.
- Operate heavy and light equipment for snow removal; inspect stormwater infrastructure with onboard computer systems.
- Diagnose, adjust, repair, and service medium and heavy automotive and specialized equipment, including diesel/gasoline engines, air compressors, pump apparatus, and aerial‑truck hydraulic systems.
- Make repairs and renovations to fields and grounds—mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding.
- Requisition parts and materials for machinery repair.
- Ensure equipment safety and that trucks are outfitted with necessary safety gear (e.g., water cooler, first aid kit, safety flares).
- Perform journey‑level trades work in carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and/or welding as needed.
- Train and instruct subordinates; assist with special events, snow removal, and other emergency tasks, including occasional nights and weekends.
- Enforce safety and housekeeping practices; follow safety rules and procedures to avoid hazards.
- High school diploma or GED and 1–3 years of related experience in automotive or light/heavy power‑driven equipment repair; or equivalent education/experience.
- Ability to qualify for certification as a State Inspector.
- Two ASE certifications required within the first year of employment.
- Preferred:
Current State Inspection License and Class B CDL.
- Possession of Class A, B, or C commercial driver’s license with endorsements as required by assignment.
- May require journey‑level license in a skilled trade area.
- Must qualify for State Inspector certification.
Regularly required to sit, use hands, reach, walk, climb, balance, talk, hear, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift or move up to 25 pounds. Requires good vision and focus adjustment.
