Hvac Specialist

Position Overview

Full‑time HVAC Specialist responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and control of facility HVAC and refrigeration systems.

• Maintain, troubleshoot, analyze, evaluate, repair, and install HVAC, R, and BAS systems, including large and complex systems.
• Lead specialty projects and oversee preventative and routine maintenance activities.
• Perform inspections and direct work to ensure code, regulation, and safety compliance for HVAC, R, and BAS installations, work orders, change orders, and emergency repairs.
• Modify BAS programming to add, delete, or change equipment points or functions, and to collect data for analysis.
• Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain machinery, electrical and mechanical equipment per diagrams, sketches, manuals, and manufacturer specifications.
• Identify and secure appropriate supplies and equipment, documenting required records and maintaining relevant project data.
• Assist in maintaining plant‑engineering capabilities and develop control systems for efficient utility utilization.
• Collaborate with facility personnel to ensure timely project completion and provide direction, guidance, and technical assistance to other staff.
• Deliver training and technical updates to expand departmental capabilities, update practices for regulatory compliance, and research new techniques, materials, and equipment.

• High school graduate or equivalent. Graduate of a trade or vocational school with coursework in blueprint reading, mathematics, physics, and specialized HVAC & R training preferred.
• Minimum five years of HVAC & R experience in commercial or healthcare maintenance.
• Appropriate level CFC certification; valid Virginia driver’s license preferred for hospital positions and required for property maintenance.
• Strong understanding of BAS programming and automated building control.
• Familiarity with relevant hospital and commercial occupancy codes.
• Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills.
• Proficiency using a computerized work order control system and maintaining required records.
• Willingness to provide basic general‑purpose maintenance tools; may be asked to provide own transportation for travel to other Carilion sites and work at other facilities as needed.
• Capability to serve as emergency personnel during adverse weather conditions.
