Signal Technician Level I – Sign Shop
The City of Roanoke is currently seeking an energetic, dedicated team player to fill a vacant Signal Technician Level I position in our Public Works/Traffic Sign Shop. This member must be able to work during adverse weather conditions, and will be on call for emergency barricade duties and special events on a rotating schedule. The position is required to work during snow events.
A Class B CDL is required within twelve months of hire. A high school diploma or GED and 2-3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience are required.

SUMMARYPerforms skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Operate street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, front‑end loader, and other medium to heavy equipment.
- Make repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding.
- Operate cranes and large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces, street and construction repairs.
- Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in the operation and maintenance of a closed‑circuit television unit designed for stormwater infrastructure inspections.
- Gather and report work site information from inspections.
- Perform tasks such as pesticide application and asphalt leveling.
- Service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Operate all equipment, both light and heavy, in snow removal.
- Paint walls and materials from surface preparation to application and finishing.
- Perform minor repair of buildings, doors, windows, floors, locks, cabinets, and similar items.
- Use and maintain spray painting and lawn care equipment for maintaining athletic fields.
- When not operating equipment, perform general laboring tasks such as collecting and removing trash and debris from city properties.
- Assist with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed.
- May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.
- May require experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markings.
- May supervise crew in absence of supervisor.
- May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties.
- Perform preventive maintenance on signal‑related equipment, as well as cleaning, adjusting, and testing equipment.
- Install and repair traffic signals, controllers, Opticom and signal video detections, school zone flashers, and all of the City‑owned street lights and other electrical and electronic equipment.
- Assist with the installation of messenger cable, hang overhead lights and other devices.
- Install and repair various vehicle detectors.
- Replace electronic components.
- Design and make various test equipment used in debugging systems.
- Install and maintain aerial and underground traffic signals and communication cables.
- Maintain standby status on rotation, make emergency repairs to equipment after‑hours.
- Keep records of work and make reports.
- Recommend and/or make modifications to electronic and other signal and communication equipment under direct supervision.
- Install and maintain automated traffic signal control equipment and systems.
- Maintain and repair school zone flasher systems.
- Maintain and repair all City‑owned street and bridge lights.
- Locate underground utility/ signal wires per UA 811 code.
- Participate in the City of Roanoke snow removal operations and installation of Christmas decorations.
- Any other task above and beyond as deemed necessary by the Supervisor.
