Overview
The City of Roanoke is seeking a Signal Technician II to perform skilled and technical work in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals and other control devices. The successful candidate will install, operate, and repair traffic signals, controllers, electronic timing devices, emergency lights, signal communication and coordination systems, and other electrical and electronic equipment; erect poles, run messenger cable, hang overhead lights, and replace electronic components.
Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED supplemented by technical training in electrical and electronic engineering and two to four years of related experience or training in the construction and maintenance of municipal traffic signals and detection systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required, as well as a CDL or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
IMSA Traffic Signal Level II certification must be possessed or obtained within four years of employment.
Performs skilled and technical work in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals and other control devices. Installs, operates, and repairs traffic signals, controllers, electronic timing devices, emergency lights, signal communication and coordination systems, and other electrical and electronic equipment. Erects poles, runs messenger cable, hangs overhead lights and other devices. Replaces electronic components. Installs and maintains automated traffic signal control equipment and coordination systems.
Serves as a lead technician in the maintenance and operation of intelligent transportation systems, including traffic monitoring cameras, variable message signs, and operations center controls and operations.
- Recommend and design modification of traffic signal controllers, relays, and other apparatus.
- Install, operate, and repair traffic signals, controllers, electronic timing devices, vehicle detection systems, emergency lights, and other electrical and electronic equipment.
- Erect poles, run messenger cable, hang overhead lights and other devices.
- Install and repair various signal vehicle detection systems.
- Replace electronic components.
- Install and maintain aerial and underground traffic signals and communication cables.
- Maintain standby status on rotation and make emergency repairs after hours.
- Keep records of work and produce reports.
- Assist in procuring routine materials and maintaining inventories.
- Recommend or make modifications to signal equipment upgrades and signal coordination system improvements.
- Assist and work with vendors on new signal technologies for current signal system improvements.
- Inspect work in progress and upon completion, verify proper observance of safety precautions.
- Assist in preparation of sketches, plans, and specifications for new construction, installation, and major repairs to existing electrical systems and equipment.
- Direct division activities when authorized in the absence of a supervisor.
- Assist traffic engineering staff in keeping traffic signal timing current and appropriately adjusted to meet current traffic demands.
- Assist contractors and utility companies during new construction.
- Assist with implementing and developing computerized timing and phase sequence for traffic signals and systems.
- Assist with signal installations meeting MUTCD standards.
- Operate heavy and light snow removal equipment.
- High school diploma or GED supplemented by technical training in electrical and electronic engineering.
- Two to four years of related experience or training in the construction and maintenance of municipal traffic signals and detection systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
