Heavy Equipment Operator
Performs responsible work safely operating of heavy or special purpose motorized equipment and tandem dump trucks. Responsible for servicing and making minor repairs to the equipment, performs various manual tasks when not operating the equipment, operates excavator in situations which may involve hazardous conflicts with other utilities and sometimes excavates very deep and potentially dangerous trenches. Leads construction crews in the absence of the foreman.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Acts as lead worker on the crew assisting the foreman ~ Operates large tandem dump trucks used for hauling materials and transporting equipment ~ Operates heavy and small equipment used in the construction and maintenance of stormwater facilities and snow removal ~ Services and makes minor repairs and adjustment s to equipment. ~ Assists in the supervision of contract work crews and employees.
~ Provides information to foreman or, other supervisor about employee performance ~ Supervises and/or performs restoration of construction projects including, but not limited to, planting trees, shrubs, seeding and reconstructing fences. ~ Makes recommendations of annual fiscal needs. Complete appropriate purchase request according to purchase guidelines. ~ Follows and enforces proper safety procedures. ~ Reads maps, plans and performs basic surveying for the construction of drainage facilities.
~ Establish and maintain cordial relationships with residents and the public that are impacted by County activities ~ Subject to twenty-four- hour stand-by and works varied shifts as assigned. ~ Performs rough and finished carpentry, concrete and masonry work. ~ Performs other duties as assigned.
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent.;
Two (2) or more years experience in the operation of heavy equipment, at the level of a MEO II and periodically, during this time, must have acted as the foreman to the satisfaction of the supervisor. Preferred:
Experience involving heavy-duty special purpose equipment
Required:
Class A Commercial Driver’s license with air brake certification and good driving record. HAZWOPER Flagging, Forklift, Trench safety and Confined Space Entry Certification required within 6-months of hire. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of safety operating and servicing heavy construction and maintenance equipment, such as tandem trucks, excavator, track loader and backhoes; and of VDOT safety and traffic rules and regulations.
Ability to operate several types of heavy equipment; service and perform minor repairs to equipment; supervise and train people; effectively work with the public; perform heavy manual labor; maintain routine records; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Must pass a qualifications test. Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results. Following a conditional offer of employment, must pass a post offer physical examination, including a drug screening.
