Sanitation Worker

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Sanitation Worker to perform unskilled work in collection of solid waste, brush/bulk items, and recyclable materials.

• Roll refuse carts from curb or behind house to truck for dumping
• Sort recyclable materials at curb from recycling can and deposit in proper compartment of truck
• Pick up refuse cans from businesses and dump into truck
• Collect brush and bulk items from alley/streets and deposit in truck
• Operate mechanism for loading, compressing, and dumping of vehicles
• Assist in unloading truck at disposal site
• Clean truck and equipment in accordance with department policy
• Report violations of SWM ordinances to driver

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• One to three months related experience and/or training in performance of heavy manual work desirable, or equivalent combination of education and experience

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; talk or hear. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions, wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles. Noise level usually loud.
