Sanitation Worker
The City of Roanoke is seeking a Sanitation Worker to perform unskilled work in collection of solid waste, brush/bulk items and recyclable materials. The successful candidate will roll refuse carts from curb or behind house to truck for dumping; sort recyclable materials at curb from recycling can and deposits in proper compartment of truck; pick up refuse cans from businesses and dumps into truck;
and collect brush and bulk from alley/streets and deposits in truck. They will also operate mechanism for loading, compressing, and dumping of vehicles; assist in unloading truck at disposal site; clean truck and equipment in accordance with department policy; and report violations of SWM ordinances to driver. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three months related experience and/or training in performance of heavy manual work is desirable;
or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Examples of DutiesPerforms unskilled work in collection of solid waste, brush/bulk and recyclable materials. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Rolls refuse carts from curb or behind house to truck for dumping
- Sorts recyclable materials at curb from recycling can and deposits in proper compartment of truck
- Picks up refuse cans from businesses and dumps into truck
- Picks up certain small white goods material and other trash too large for carts and place in refuse trucks
- Collects brush and bulk items from alley/streets and deposits in truck
- Operates mechanism for loading, compressing and dumping of vehicles
- Assists in unloading truck at disposal site
- Cleans area around cans/carts
- Cleans truck and equipment in accordance with department policy
- Reports violations of SWM ordinances to driver

Education and/or
Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three months related experience and/or training in performance of heavy manual work is desirable; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
