The City of Robbinsdale seeks a seasonal Adaptive Recreation Specialist to join our team for the 2026 Birdtown Summer Blast day camp!
The Adaptive Recreation Specialist will provide inclusion support for youth, teens and adults with disability-related needs, including support with social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs when necessary.
This is a temporary position with a consistent schedule from Monday-Thursday from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Adaptive Recreation Specialists can work up to 20 hours per week Monday-Friday during the summer in multiple locations depending on participant registration and staff availability.
Applicants must be available to work this schedule for all eight weeks of the Birdtown Summer Blast day camp, from June 8th through August 6th, 2025.

Position Objective:The Adaptive Recreation Specialist is dedicated to providing inclusive recreational opportunities for youth with disabilities, ensuring all participants have access to engaging, safe, and meaningful experiences tailored to their individual needs.
Professional/TechnicalDuties and Responsibilities:
- Provide inclusion support for youth with disability-related needs, including support with social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs when necessary.
- Ensure the safe setup of activities and closely monitor participants during sessions, addressing any safety concerns or emergencies that arise.
- Modify equipment, games, and procedures to accommodate physical, sensory, and cognitive disabilities, ensuring accessibility and safe participation for all youth.
- Communicate progress with participant families/guardians/caregivers on a regular basis.
- Communicate with program staff and Community Engagement Coordinator about participant progress and necessary accommodations.
- Maintain documentation related to participant progress in each program.
- Ability to adapt activities, equipment, and environments to empower youth with a broad range of physical, cognitive, and emotional needs to thrive in recreational programming.
- Understanding of various physical, cognitive, and sensory disabilities, and how they impact participation in recreational activities.
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with individuals with disabilities, families, staff, and community partners, both verbally and in writing.
- Skill in managing challenging behaviors with patience, respect, and positive reinforcement strategies.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Three or more years of experience working with elementary-aged children with disabilities.
- Current certifications in two or more of the following: elementary education, SPED, Academic Behavior Strategist, Crisis Prevention Intervention, Autism Spectrum Disorder.
This job typically requires walking, talking, and supporting youth in activities such as sports, games, educational or craft activities.
Working Conditions:The work is primarily performed outdoors or in a climate-controlled park building.
