Position PurposeThe Truss Design Manager leads the truss design function to deliver accurate, code-compliant, and production-ready designs that support sales growth, manufacturing efficiency, and customer satisfaction. This role is responsible for managing design resources, ensuring quality and consistency, and aligning design output with production capacity and overall business objectives.
Key Responsibilities- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of remote and on-site truss designers to ensure accurate, timely, and production-ready design output
- Assign, prioritize, and balance design workloads to meet customer commitments, production schedules, and business demand
- Oversee the design of floor, roof, and related structural components for residential, multifamily, and light commercial projects
- Review and approve truss designs prior to release for production to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance with IRC, IBC (as applicable), and local building codes
- Serve as the primary escalation point for complex designs, technical challenges, and customer or field issues
- Communicate with Sales, Production, customers, architects, engineers, and builders to obtain information, resolve conflicts, and support timely project completion
- Partner with the Sales team to support estimating, pricing strategy, and project feasibility while aligning design capacity with sales demand
- Coordinate closely with Production and Operations to ensure designs align with manufacturing capabilities and minimize rework or delays
- Proactively identify and resolve design, engineering, or workflow issues before they impact customers or production
- Monitor department performance metrics including turnaround time, accuracy, rework, and capacity utilization
- Drive continuous improvement through standardized workflows, best practices, and effective use of MiTek and related design software
- Support hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, and professional development of design team members
- Build and maintain strong professional relationships with customers, engineers, and industry partners
- Represent the design department in internal meetings and contribute to operational and strategic planning discussions
- Visit job sites as needed to review field conditions, support issue resolution, and coordinate with customers, builders, and project teams
- Minimum of 5 years of truss design experience using MiTek or comparable truss design software
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a design, engineering, or technical environment
- Strong working knowledge of floor and roof truss systems, load paths, and basic structural principles
- In-depth knowledge of IRC and applicable local building codes
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret construction documents and blueprints
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with customers, architects, engineers, and internal teams
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Associate’s degree in drafting, engineering technology, construction management, or related field, or equivalent experience
- Experience with single-family, multifamily, and light commercial projects
- Familiarity with wall panels and other structural building components
- Experience managing or supporting remote design teams
- Ability to lift and move items up to 25 lbs. using appropriate equipment and techniques
- Occasional exposure to manufacturing and outdoor environments
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move throughout office and production areas
