Responsibilities

As a Chemical Engineer at a Marathon refinery, you will become familiar with process equipment fundamentals and best practices, build critical‑thinking skills, and understand how engineering disciplines work together in a cohesive team. You will learn how a refinery operates by working with professionals who run a specific portion of the refining process and may have the opportunity to work in multiple areas, expanding your written and verbal presentation skills in a professional environment.

Operations Research Engineers – Develop planning, blending, scheduling, and process models to optimize crude oil purchasing, refinery production, and product scheduling. Typical co‑op assignments involved validating production data, mass balancing, process modeling, and building graphical interfaces for refinery units.

Environmental Engineers – Apply engineering principles to environmental projects throughout the refinery, gaining exposure to environmental laws and compliance. Duties have included performing risk‑management calculations, surveying refinery process units, working on wastewater treatment projects, and participating in inspections by federal, state, or local officials.

Products Control / Economics Engineers – Engage in projects covering operations, blending, and refinery economics. Experience includes analyzing refinery flow data, updating gasoline blend information for audits, and developing applications to present process data for operating decisions.
