The RN is responsible for utilizing the nursing process to assess, plan, direct, administer, and evaluate evidence‑based, outcome‑oriented patient care in the Medical / Surgical and Special Care Unit department. The RN provides continual assessment of patient needs, implements interventions as necessary, oversees the quality of care performed by CNAs and other assigned personnel, participates in decision‑making activities related to nursing practices, and responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.
GeneralDuties, Tasks, and Responsibilities
- Perform accurate and complete assessment of patients; perform initial admission assessment; coordinate and ensure completion of interdisciplinary screenings and assessments; assess and re‑assess pain; assessments are age, culture and psychosocial appropriate.
- Formulate a plan of care based on patient needs; modify the plan of care based on patient outcomes; formulate a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluate the effectiveness of learning, including educating patient/family regarding treatment plan and providing discharge planning/instructions.
- Make comprehensive nursing decisions based on interpretation of facts and evaluation of patient outcomes; assist physicians with procedures; utilize other departments to provide interdisciplinary care as appropriate; maintain knowledge of telemetry monitoring system; identify arrhythmias and treat accordingly.
- Prepare and administer medications based on age / clinical condition of the patient; start intravenous lines for medications and fluids.
- Assess effectiveness of pain medications; revise plan of care as indicated by the patient's response to treatment as appropriate.
- Ensure documentation is complete, accurate and timely; prepare the patient record in both electronic and chart form.
- Perform all aspects of the position in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces likelihood of medical/healthcare errors; utilize established hand‑off communication protocols; maintain security of the department.
- Answer patient call lights promptly and courteously; inquire about patient needs prior to leaving room; observe and report any changes in condition or behaviors exhibited by patients.
- Comply with all established safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
- Participate in performance improvement activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Current IL RN License required.
- BLS required.
- ACLS certification required within 12 months of hire.
- PALS certification required within 2 years of hire.
- Registered Nurse minimum 2 years.
- Strong computer skills with ability to navigate EMR programs.
- Ability to multi‑task, prioritize, and work independently in a team environment.
- Excellent ability to thrive under pressure and adapt to changes in assignment.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
