Job Summary

Responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on semi‑truck trailers and tractors, including brake adjustments, tire replacements, electrical troubleshooting, basic structural repairs, and more, while working out of a service truck and adhering to strict safety regulations. Perform general repairs on tractor and trailer units in accordance with DOT, federal and state regulations and company standards. Use technical publications or automated systems to maintain vehicles to prescribed manufacturers’ schedules and research parts.

Properly annotate all maintenance and labor performed in maintenance management software.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair tractors and trailers.
  • Perform annual, systematic 90‑day and HM‑183 inspections (tankers) on equipment as required.
  • Ensure equipment meets Federal FHWA standards.
  • Operate a yard hostler truck to move trailers within the facility yard and the shop as needed.
  • Order and receive parts and supplies as needed.
  • Adhere to all established safety (OSHA) and environmental policies and standards, including identification, use, and proper procedures for handling or disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Clean, organize and maintain the work environment to ensure equipment longevity and workplace safety.
  • Use welding equipment.
  • Perform HM‑183 DOT inspections on tankers (P, V, I, K, L, HS, UC) (EPA‑M27).
Skills and Abilities
  • At least 3 years of experience in repair and service of trailers, hazmat tankers, and medium‑duty trucks.
  • Knowledge of vehicle and equipment theory, principles and repair related to diesel engines, air, electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Minimum of 3 years of tractor and trailer maintenance experience, DOT rules and regulations.
  • Ability to use vehicle diagnostic software.
  • Minimum of 2 years as a fleet mechanic.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of DOT HM‑183 certification, training or experience. ASE Certification not required but recommended.
  • High school diploma or completion of G.E.D. required.
Position Type / Hours of Work
  • Full‑time position;
    Monday through Friday, hours depend on location.
Company Information
  • The shop has a climate similar to outdoor weather. Frequent exposure to loud machinery, air tool operation, hammering and engine noise.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Able to fit into a 20” cargo trailer dome opening.
  • Able to meet safety standards for fall protection harness – max weight 310 lbs. (includes all PPE worn).
  • Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Walk for long periods of time.
  • Bend or twist their body.
  • See differences between colors, shades, and brightness.
