Position Summary

The Cardiac Rehab RN evaluates cardiac patients and formulates a nursing plan of care, implements the plan, evaluates the patient's and family's nursing care needs, and provides health educational needs for patients. The RN manages patient care assignments, demonstrates professional and clinical competence, provides age‑specific care, supports program compliance and maintenance of all records and logs, and provides daily clinical nursing services.

The role of the nurse in cardiac stress testing includes professional patient care and performing procedures including exercise and pharmacological cardiac stress testing with or without nuclear imaging and echocardiography.

Education
  • Be a graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. BSN encouraged.
Licensure / Certification or Credentials
  • Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Illinois.
  • Has maintained 20 continuing education hours over a two‑year period as required by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation for licensure.
  • BLS and ACLS required; PALS encouraged.
Experience
  • Minimum of two years' experience in a hospital‑based cardiac, critical care, or emergency department setting.
Skills & Competencies
  • Experience reading and interpreting EKG/arrhythmia.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills.
  • Familiarity with Electronic Health Record (EPIC).
  • Maintain precise medical documentation.
  • Ability to coach patients through physical exertion and calm anxious individuals during procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment.
  • Ability to communicate, empathize, and interact with patients.
  • Ability to explain test procedures, assess tests, obtain informed consent, and screen for contraindications.
  • Preceptor for new hires or cross‑training staff.
  • Collaborate closely with cardiologists, specialized technicians, patients, and other staff, requiring strong communication.
  • Work independently or as a team member.

Work Environment:
The Stress Lab RN works in a fast‑paced hospital setting focused on procedural efficiency, cardiac monitoring, and direct patient education. The environment fosters collaboration, open communication, and employee well‑being, contributing to excellent patient care and job satisfaction. The Stress Lab Nurse may be exposed to biohazard materials, infectious diseases, and non‑biohazards (e.g., radiant energy, drugs, chemicals).

Physical Demands
  • Ability to work and complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Medium work, exerting up to 50 lbs of force occasionally to move objects—including the human body—and frequently lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 20 lbs or up to 10 lbs constantly.
  • Constant standing, walking, reaching, patient handling, talking, hearing, and seeing.
  • Physical ability to perform nurse hands‑on duties such as kneeling, bending, upper body strength, and cognitive demand.
