Library Associate I – Youth Services Divisions, City of Rochester

Overview

Nature of Work

The Library Associate I is a paraprofessional library position that utilizes complex computer programs and electronic resources. Duties include acquiring and cataloging library materials, maintaining collections, assisting library patrons at the public desk, organizing and facilitating library programs and activities for children and young adults, and overseeing employees and/or volunteers. Depending on assignment, responsibilities may include developing and maintaining website content.

Work is 40 hours per week located in Youth Services. Significant portion of time is spent creating, presenting, and evaluating programs for children from birth through age 18 and the adults who live and work with them.

Work Schedule:

Library open until 8:00 p.m. Monday–Thursday, and 6:00 p.m. Friday–Sunday. This position requires flexibility to work evenings and weekends.

Pay

Starting rate $30.58 per hour; advance to $38.41 per hour.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Meet or exceed the library's customer service standards in all interactions with the public and staff.
  • Provide readers advisory and reference services at the service desk or bookmobile.
  • Assist patrons in locating information and finding materials.
  • Support patrons using library collections, equipment, and digital services.
  • Place interlibrary loan requests, holds, and bookings using the library's automated systems.
  • Maintain public safety and enforce the library’s code of conduct.
  • Create and maintain displays and resource lists.
  • Manage ordering and record-keeping of library materials.
  • Check in newly arrived materials and ensure accurate cataloging.
  • Keep financial or statistical records.
  • Handle direct special orders, back orders, returns, and other acquisition-related issues.
  • Catalog assigned materials for public access.
  • Maintain quality control of new items and revise outdated information.
  • Inventory specific collection areas; evaluate condition and recommend actions.
  • Assist in discard management and donation evaluation per policy.
  • Plan, budget, promote, execute, and evaluate programs aligned with library goals.
  • Hire performers and manage contracts for library programs.
  • Input public programs into online tools and collaborate with communications staff.
  • Create publicity materials such as flyers and brochures.
  • Assist staff with programming efforts.
  • Provide public training on library resources.
  • Oversee volunteers and part-time staff.
  • Train staff and public on computer, printer, and copier issues.
  • Coordinate library services with external agencies.
  • Maintain website information for the division.
  • Develop schedule drafts and usage statistics.
  • Serve on library-wide and divisional committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent plus two years of library experience.
  • OR Associate's Degree plus six months related experience.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform essential duties.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Ability to speak or read a language other than English.
Special Requirements

This position requires evening and weekend hours.

Physical and Environmental Criteria

Light work: up to 20 pounds occasionally; up to 10 pounds frequently; negligible weight constantly. Medium work for Bookmobile tasks: up to 50 pounds occasionally; up to 20 pounds frequently; up to 10 pounds constantly.

Must perform essential functions with or without accommodation.

Environmental conditions not substantial.

Bookmobile may expose employee to extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, dust/gas/fumes/chemicals, and outdoor weather.
