Position: Advanced Para for Behavior and Instruction, SPED (BIP)

Advanced Para educator for Behavior and Instruction

The Advanced Para educator for Behavior and Instruction is a role designed to support students with significant behavioral needs within mainstream school environments. The Behavior Instruction Para educator (BIP) provides real-time intervention and implements behavior support plans to help students remain successful in general or resource education settings. The role emphasizes de-escalation, behavioral coaching, and instructional support in a mainstream building.

Essential duties include:

  • Assist in the implementation and follow through of educational programs developed through the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process and Behavior Support Plan
  • Assist with student physical and behavioral management, including working individually with students who are removed from class, and employing non-violent crisis intervention strategies
  • Supervise/assist students during instructional and non-instructional activities
  • Observe, monitor, and communicate student progress to teachers
  • Collect student academic and behavior data under the direction of the special education teacher
  • Adhere to federal, state and district student data confidentiality and privacy laws
  • Assist students with feeding, lifting/positioning, bathroom needs, personal hygiene, and swimming as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

BIP specific duties include:

  • Respond to behavior in real time to support student success in the classroom
  • Support individual student academic and behavior programming, and implement accommodations and modifications as directed by special education staff
  • Implement special education behavior support plans and monitor for effectiveness
  • Facilitate calming/de-escalation routines supported by the special education teacher
  • Reinforce appropriate student behavior and facilitate appropriate social interactions among students
  • Respond to and manage complex student behaviors

Physical factors include:

  • The ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time; may be exposed to adverse weather
  • Frequent: walking, standing, sitting, hearing, talking, and seeing
  • Light Work: exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects
