AccessABLE Rec. Swimming Instructor Parks and Recreation Department

The City of Rochester Parks and Recreation Department, AccessABLE Rec. Program is currently seeking excited and qualified people to teach adaptive swim lessons to children aged 4-12 with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities.

Nature of Work

This is a temporary/seasonal/limited appointment position that is responsible for assisting children with a variety of cognitive and/or physical disabilities who are participating in AccessABLE Rec. swimming programs.

Hourly Rate Of Pay

$16.81-$19.96 per hour, depending on qualifications/experience

1.5-3 hours/week

Time Frame

Mondays and Wednesdays during the school year from October 2026 –May 2027, with holidays off and breaks in between seasons. We are flexible and will work with people’s schedules throughout this period.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Work directly with individuals with disabilities, encouraging water readiness and teaching basic swim skills.
  • Assist with setting out & putting away equipment & supplies.
  • Greet students and families at beginning of each class and escorts students in and out of the pool.
  • Communicate progress and make suggestions for progress to parents and to AccessABLE Recreation Program Coordinator
  • Monitor and enforce safe behavior and encourage all appropriate safety precautions in and around pool area.
  • Complete any necessary forms and or other required paperwork pertaining to students and program policies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicants must be at least 16 years of age, demonstrate responsibility and maturity.
  • Must be committed to work when scheduled.
  • Must be comfortable working in the water with students of various intellectual and physical abilities.
  • Must be self-motivated, comfortable in the water, and able to physically lift, hold, and provide necessary physical support to students.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Passionate about teaching and willing to learn.
  • Experience performing similar work
Physical and Environmental Criteria

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the following represents the physical and environmental demands for this position. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.

In consideration of the overall amount of physical effort required to perform this position, the work is best described as Light Work :
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Physical Demands

Continuous demands: sitting, standing, walking

Frequent demands: lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling

Occasional demands: kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting

Sensory Requirements

Necessary in the performance of the essential functions of this position include: sight, hearing, and touch
