ResponsibilitiesThe chaplain provides emotional support, spiritual counsel, and comfort, addressing the spiritual needs of patients, families, and staff. They offer a spiritual perspective in consultation with Mayo Clinic staff, patients, and families regarding ethical, moral, or personal issues and are an active participant in the interdisciplinary patient care team. The chaplain promotes a healing environment, enhances spiritual and emotional health for patients and staff, participates in departmental educational programs, engages in community involvement, and may participate in research as appropriate.
Availability for on‑call requests—including days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends—is required. They will prepare and maintain records for assigned areas, document patient care encounters in the medical record, and record work tasks in EPIC to document productivity. The chaplain must demonstrate humility across cultures, knowledge of human development across the lifespan, and the ability to assess and interpret data relative to the patient’s age‑specific needs.
They may travel to provide spiritual support in facilities or patients’ residences and participate in advance care planning, where appropriate.
• Masters Theological degree (e.g., MDiv) from an accredited seminary. Preferred:
Master in Public Health or PhD in related fields such as philosophy, religion, ethics, or spiritual care research.
• Minimum of four units Clinical Pastoral Education from an ACPE‑approved center. If a current ACPE Resident, the fourth unit must be completed within 1 year of hire.
• Preferred: 1–2 years of working experience in a healthcare setting.
• Faith‑specific chaplain requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in theological or related field (preferred: Master’s or PhD). Minimum of one ACPE unit; four units preferred. Faith‑specific chaplains expected to serve non‑religious spiritual needs must complete four ACPE units and become Board Certified within four years of hire.
• Endorsement by a faith community within 1 year of hire.
• Board Certification or certification‑eligible (BCC) within one or more of the following: APC, NACC/USCCB, ACPE, or AJC. Chaplain should be Board Certified upon hire or complete certification within 4 years with a national association requiring a minimum of four ACPE units.
• Unrestricted, unexpired driver’s license for chaplains whose clinical assignments require travel.

Skills required:
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including computer skills; 1 year EMR documentation experience in a healthcare setting.

$28.80 – $43.25 / hour
SchedulePart Time;
Supplemental/PRN, as needed for staffing. Shift coverage varies across days, evenings, nights, and holidays, Monday through Sunday.
