The Fire Captain serves as a first level supervisor in Rochester Fire Department providing leadership and direction to an assigned fire company. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, responding to emergency incidents and assuming the role as Incident Commander in accordance with departmental policy; providing supervision to assigned employees; exhibiting leadership effectiveness through building an engaged team and acting as a positive reflection and advancing the vision of the City and Fire Department;

preparing federal, state, and department reports; conducting inspections and hazard assessments; and facilitating fire prevention activities, educational programs, and training courses within the community.

The work below is representative of the scope of work performed within this job classification. Individual job duties will vary based on work assignment.

• Direct employees to the completion of work assignments; delegate responsibilities as appropriate
• Evaluate the performance of assigned employees and conduct timely annual performance reviews
• Ensure the performance of employees is in accordance with City and departmental policies, procedures, and standards
• Conduct company level training regularly; provide ongoing mentorship to work crew
• Participate in training evolutions; evaluate employee performance during these exercises and offer suggestions for process improvement
• Ensure employee and training records are current

• Create a high-level of engagement within the team through open dialogue, empowerment, and inclusion
• Demonstrate courage in providing direct and current feedback to others and addressing difficult people or situations when they occur
• Stop negative or unproductive behaviors that are detrimental to the team or other teammates
• Encourage employees to maximize their personal effectiveness though coaching, mentoring, development, and accountability
• Lead by example through demonstrating active listening, vulnerability, and humility
• Improve personal leadership skills and effectiveness; engage in self-reflection and actively seek input from others to identify self-improvement opportunities

• Represent the department leadership team positively to all teammates through words and actions
• Inspire teammates to advance and support the City and department strategic vision and objectives

• Command fire company engaged in emergency activities in a calm and professional manner
• Initiate incident strategies and plans and assign resources to the incident in the absence of the Battalion Chief
• Implement incident strategies and plans at the direction of the Incident Commander
• Make technical decisions as to the best method of extinguishing fires, controlling releases of hazardous chemicals, and performing rescues
• Evaluate risks, hazards, and threats of working environment to ensure safety of department employees
