The CICU is a 18-bed unit that is supported by a multidisciplinary team of experienced nurses, monitor technicians, respiratory therapists, patient care assistants, health unit coordinators, cardiology residents/fellows, and consultants who oversee the care and management of all patients. The CICU staff care for patients with acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, post infarction angina, congestive heart failure, life‑threatening arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, valvular heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, and postcardiac arrest.

Nursing Team Roles: The multidisciplinary CICU team utilizes many advanced support modalities such as mechanical ventilation, intra‑aortic balloon pump (IABP), and temporary left ventricular devices like the Tandem Heart and Impella, in addition to invasive monitoring using both pulmonary artery and central venous catheters. Other advanced technologies include continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and therapeutic hypothermia (Arctic Sun).
Computerized charting and monitoring systems are used to collect patient data and vital signs.
Family‑centered care is supported with open visitation and a strong commitment to continuity of care and the primary nursing care delivery model. The high acuity and technologically advanced environment create numerous practice, research, and educational opportunities.
