Position Overview

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Neonatal ICU is accountable for the coordination and delivery of nursing care across the continuum, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and care transitions.

RNs practice within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model and are responsible for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all aspects of care.

Unit Overview

This role supports care across Mayo Clinic's NICU environments, including:

* Level III NICU (Eisenberg 35)

* 24-bed, family-centered unit with 21 private rooms

* Focus on premature and medically complex infants requiring specialized ICU care

* Integrated Neonatal High-Risk Delivery Team supporting delivery resuscitation and stabilization

* Level IV NICU (Mary Brigh 3B & Transport Team)

* State-of-the-art unit caring for the most critically ill neonates

* Includes surgical, cardiac, and multisystem conditions

* Features a specialized Neonatal Transport Team for regional transfers

Both areas operate within a closed staffing model, adjusting schedules based on patient volume and acuity.

Patient Population & Care Scope

Care provided spans a wide acuity range, including:

* Premature infants (moderate to extremely premature)

* Infants requiring respiratory support (CPAP, BiPAP, ventilation, high-flow)

* Nutritional support (breastfeeding, bottle feeding, tube feeding, TPN)

* Observation and medical management of neonatal conditions

* Advanced therapies including surgical care, therapeutic hypothermia, and dialysis (Level IV)

Key Responsibilities

* Deliver safe, high-quality nursing care to neonatal patients

* Coordinate interdisciplinary care planning and implementation

* Educate and support patients' families

* Supervise and guide nursing interventions and team members

* Participate in high-risk deliveries, stabilization, and resuscitation (as applicable)

* Contribute to quality improvement and evidence-based practice initiatives

* Potential for leadership roles such as preceptor or mentor
