Responsibilities:
The Ambulatory Registered Nurse (RN) is an integral member of the outpatient surgical care team, partnering with surgeons, residents, nurse practitioners/physician assistants (NPs/PAs), and other healthcare professionals to deliver exceptional patient-centered care. This role focuses on the preoperative and postoperative management of adult patients within the Breast and Melanoma Surgery practice.
Key responsibilities include conducting patient assessments, providing preoperative and postoperative education, reinforcing disease-specific care plans, and coordinating multidisciplinary care with specialties such as the Breast Clinic, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Plastic Surgery to ensure seamless patient care.
The RN also manages non-face-to-face patient care through telephone triage, patient portal communications, and electronic health record workflows including the processing of orders, maintaining surgical listings, involvement in multidisciplinary collaboration via electronic in-basket and email communications, and coordinating care activities as directed by the physician.
Success in this role requires strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and communication skills. The ideal candidate is highly organized, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. The RN must be comfortable working independently while contributing to a collaborative team dedicated to outstanding patient experiences and outcomes.
The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
The ANA Nursing:
Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching;
and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role.
