About the Role

The Division of Ecological and Water Resources is seeking one permanent seasonal Authorized Level 2 Watercraft Inspector to educate the public about harmful invasive species, inspect watercraft for aquatic invasive species, and assist watercraft users with decontamination.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect and decontaminate watercraft and water‑related equipment according to DNR protocols to ensure compliance with aquatic invasive species laws and regulations.
  • Use computers or tablets proficiently to participate in online meetings or trainings and gather survey data during inspections and decontaminations.
  • Assist conservation officers as assigned by the Regional Watercraft Inspection Supervisor to operate check stations efficiently and file violation reports accurately.
  • Maintain mechanical equipment so that units remain in safe working condition and minimize downtime due to breakdowns.
  • Complete administrative duties promptly to meet program needs.

This position requires physically crawling, climbing, or entering watercraft and trailers for visual inspection; pulling hoses and operating high‑pressure, hot‑water decontamination equipment; and lifting or carrying equipment weighing up to 75 pounds, using appropriate personal protective equipment and following safety procedures.

Minimum Qualifications Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong human relations and negotiation skills for interacting with watercraft operators in a professional, tactful, and persuasive manner.
  • Effective communication skills to explain laws, requirements, and procedures; to listen, answer questions, and inform operators of non‑compliance consequences.
  • Knowledge of natural resource management, environmental, and biological processes sufficient to educate users and identify invasive species.
  • Excellent written communication to prepare clear, concise inspection reports and relay information to supervisors and law enforcement.
Abilities
  • Maintain a professional, calm and helpful demeanor in all circumstances, representing the Department positively.
  • Operate and maintain medium to heavy equipment while using proper personal protective equipment and following safety procedures.
  • Gather data through observation and questioning to prepare accurate reports that could serve as a basis for legal or corrective action.
  • Manage workload independently with minimal supervision to complete work duties.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of a variety of watercraft types.
  • At least 3 months of experience conducting inspections for compliance with statutes, regulations, or licensing requirements.
  • An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in law enforcement, natural resource management, biology, ecology, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience applying statutory requirements to factual situations within a regulatory entity.
  • Experience performing routine maintenance and repair of small and large equipment and tools.
  • Experience towing and maneuvering various trailers.
Additional Requirements

Unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Ability to meet the physical requirements and work in the environmental conditions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations.
