Research Assistant/Associate
The Student Training Experience Program partners with Riverland Community College students to provide a research experience for up to two consecutive semesters at The Hormel Institute. Students apply knowledge learned in coursework, gain practical experience in biomedical research, enhance professional development, and deepen their understanding of research and science professions. Participation is encouraged for both Fall and Spring semesters, and the employer retains the right to change or assign other duties.
Work Schedule:
Monday‑Friday, up to 15 hours per week or 130 hours total per semester. Aligned with Riverland’s Academic Calendar.
- Perform laboratory experiments in the assigned laboratory.
- Clean, sanitize and maintain laboratory bench space and equipment such as autoclaving and glassware.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations.
- Help maintain lab supplies inventory by checking stock and determining levels.
- Work closely with lab members to support research activities.
- Participate in program check‑ins and evaluation at start, middle, and end of program.
- Participate in professional development opportunities designed for interns.
- Other duties as assigned.
The Research and Innovation Office endorses a “work with flexibility” approach that offers a welcoming and flexible work environment. Work location options include fully remote, partially remote, or entirely in the office, based on the position. Some on‑site work may be necessary. The position is designated as eligible for Flexible Work Profile One, expected to work primarily on‑site at The Hormel Institute in Austin, MN.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instruction in English.
- Must be a current Riverland Community College student enrolled in science coursework, majoring in Laboratory Sciences, Biology, or Chemistry related degrees.
- College coursework in biology and/or chemistry.
- Prior laboratory experience.
- Skilled in completing work accurately and with attention to detail.
Pay Range: $16.00 per hour, depending on education, qualifications and experience. Student workers are eligible to participate in the Student Health Benefit Plan if they maintain six or more eligible course credits within a given semester.
