MnDOT District 6 may fill up to 1 Heavy Equipment Mechanic vacancy at the Rochester Equipment Shop in District 6:

Winter hours are Monday - Thursday, 6:00 am - 4:30 pm

Examples of work for this position are listed below but not limited to the following:
  • Diagnose and repair equipment so that down time is minimized, and equipment is available when needed.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections on equipment as needed so that all equipment is in specified condition and accurate records are available.
  • Repair and/or fabricate parts, when needed, so that equipment is operational.
  • Use required computer programs so that repair information is recorded accurately and available for use by others.
  • Maintain individual and state tool inventory so that all tools are in usable condition and accounted for.
  • Work with shop supervisor, shop employees and other stakeholders to look for opportunities to improve processes in order to create greater efficiencies in workflow and/or work procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

To qualify for Heavy Equipment Mechanic, applicants must meet the following:

  • Three years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic which includes:
  • OR
  • Completion of Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship program or graduation from a two-year Heavy Equipment Mechanic or related training program that included:
  • AND
  • Must possess a valid Class D driver’s license or an equivalent license from another state or jurisdiction and must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no Air Brake Restriction and Tanker Endorsement within 6‑months of initial placement into the position and maintain it as a condition of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with Arc, MIG, TIG, and Acetylene welding.
  • Experience performing electrical wiring on equipment.
  • Experience with fabricating parts from blueprints and drawings.
  • Experience communicating highly technical issues effectively, both orally and in writing to a non‑technical audience.
