Position Description

Recreation Attendants will be hired at the Outdoor Pools, Tennis Center, and National Volleyball Center.

Nature of Work

This is a part‑time/seasonal position at various City recreation facilities:
Outdoor Pools, Tennis Center, and National Volleyball Center. The Recreation Attendant assists with the day‑to‑day operations of the facility, such as scheduling activities, cash handling, record keeping; ensuring that all patrons follow facility rules for safety; and ensuring areas are clean, orderly, and properly maintained. This position must be able to interact with the public in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner.

Pay Rate: $13.66 - $16.81 per hour, depending on qualifications/experience.

The City of Rochester will not sponsor or transfer visas for this position including F1 OPT STEM.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Engage and interact with the public by greeting and assisting them.
  • Oversee patron use of facility.
  • Collect fees and cash from customers; operate the cash register.
  • Securely maintain money box; assure correct amount of money available each day.
  • Ensure proper use of and care of equipment, facilities, property, and supplies.
  • Enforce facility rules and regulations, caution facility users regarding safe practices and safety hazards.
  • Follow emergency action plans and procedures established in the event of an emergency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicants must be at least 14 years of age; to work at the Volleyball Center you must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to deal professionally and tactfully with the public.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of operating a cash register and proper cash handling procedures. Knowledge of pool equipment or other facility specific equipment depending on work assignment.

Skill in providing customer service; dealing professionally and tactfully with the public; time management; and verbal and written communication.

Ability to handle money and calculate fees and carry out oral and written assignments.

Physical and Environmental Criteria

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the following represents the physical and environmental demands for this position. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation. The work is best described as Light Work:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. However, all lifeguards must possess the ability to perform swimming rescues on drowning victims including approaching, breaking holds, and carrying people, which may require the removal of an adult victim from the water.

Physical demands that may be required continuously (2/3 or more of the time), frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time) are noted below:

Continuous demands: standing, sitting, walking.

Occasional demands: lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting.

Sensory requirements necessary in the performance of the essential functions of this position include: sight, hearing, touch, and smell.

Environmental conditions that may exist in the performance of the essential functions of this job include:

  • Extreme heat (above 100 degrees)
  • Noise (need to shout in order to be heard)
  • Exposure to dust/gas/fumes/steam/chemicals
  • Work outdoors (no effective protection from weather)
  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases
