This posting is a multi-level opening for positions in five District 1 Truck Stations:
Cook (1), Deer Lake (2), Grand Marais (1), International Falls (2), Nopeming (Duluth,
2), Pike Lake (Duluth,
1), and Sandstone (1). If positions are not filled by qualified applicants at the Transportation Generalist level, the positions will be filled at the Transportation Associate level. The Transportation Associate and Transportation Generalist are the first two levels in our Transportation Specialist Series and serve to maintain our roads and keep the community traveling safely.

Transportation Associate

In this trainee position you will be trained in our work and, with successful performance, promoted to the Transportation Generalist job title/classification after one year of training. You will help obtain your CDL while earning pay and benefits.

Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance
  • Maintains and reconstructs roadways, right‑of‑ways, and roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair; installs catch basins, places and removes Adopt‑A‑Highway bags, and performs drainage and shoulder repair.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for maintaining roadways.
  • Sets up traffic control in high‑volume traffic in accordance with Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual to ensure safety of employees and the traveling public.
  • Performs landscaping duties—including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, and brush on roadside—planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming, removal, chipping of tree limbs, and stump removal/grinding.
Snow & Ice
  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations; removes snow from rights‑of‑way or yards; applies anti‑icing and de‑icing chemicals; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.
  • Prepares and inspects winter equipment—maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges, and sanders; cleans equipment after storms.
  • Performs preseason snow route inspection and post‑storm cleanup, including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
  • Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
Hours of work

This is a full‑time, year‑round position with seasonal schedules. Summer hours are Monday‑Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; winter hours are Monday‑Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Hours may include overtime, various shifts, days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required by weather and maintenance conditions. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to assigned work locations within one hour of being called.

Transportation Generalist

Minimum Qualifications
  • One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities such as road maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience.
  • Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program will substitute for one year of experience (submission of transcripts required).
  • Minimum of a valid MN Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” with tanker endorsement and no air‑brake restriction, and ability to upgrade to a CDL Class A with tanker endorsement and no air‑brake restriction within 30 days of hire.
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and understanding oral and written information; communicating with employees and the public in‑person or via two‑way radio and other electronic devices; and maintaining routine written logs and simple records.
Transportation Associate

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver's Permit with no air‑brake restrictions;
    Tanker Endorsement must be obtained by hire date. You will be trained and must obtain a Class A CDL within 3 months of hire.
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and understanding oral and written information; communicating with employees and the public in‑person or via two‑way radio and other electronic devices; and maintaining routine written logs and simple records.
