Eligibility for benefits may vary by location.
- Performs complex laboratory procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems.
- Compares patient information on specimens with computer generated labels to ensure all labels consistently match.
- Performs instrument QC as required. Adheres to established quality control policies and accurately troubleshoots when quality control is unacceptable.
- Participates in Quality Improvement activities and Proficiency testing.
- Evaluates and makes sure test results correlate with diagnosis and each other and understands age‑specific normal values.
- Demonstrates the ability to learn and apply new methodologies.
- Understands all procedures as outlined in the department policy and procedure manuals.
- Develops the skills and knowledge needed to assist in various departments of the laboratory.
- Trains new employees and other laboratory personnel as requested.
- Instructs hospital and other non‑laboratory personnel on the proper lab procedures and policies.
- Prepares specimens and routes them to the appropriate reference laboratory for testing not performed on site.
- Performs scheduled instrument maintenance procedures.
- Performs correlation studies on new lots of chemicals, reagents, kits and media or on new methodologies.
- Performs venipuncture and capillary procedures accurately as requested.
- Orders and restocks supplies as needed. May be required to lift heavy objects.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Scientist or related field; MT(ASCP)/MLS(ASCP) eligible or equivalent for Technologist.
- Copy of academic degree or transcript required.
General learning ability needed to learn, understand and apply knowledge in Biology, Chemistry and other clinical lab specialties needed to perform standardized tests on blood, urine and other body fluids, using medical reagent kits and instrumentation that identifies the presence of disease. Verbal ability needed to read and understand written procedures that explain testing procedures used to properly perform each task.
Eye‑Hand coordination and finger dexterity needed to operate specific pipetting and other equipment, and to input test result data into computer. Color vision required to identify hue of specimens and when performing chemical color testing.
