Statement of Duties

The purpose of the work is to provide for the safe crossing of children by streets on their way to and from school. Under the supervision of the Sergeant, the incumbent is responsible for directing traffic at assigned crossings to protect school children and to provide for the orderly movement of traffic.

• Report directly to assigned crossing station, be on time and remain there until the conclusion of the assignment.
• Ensure that children use the proper crossing location and that no children are in the street while traffic is moving.
• Be alert for present or potential traffic or safety problems in the area surrounding the assigned crossing. Report to the department any such hazards and recommend remedial steps.
• Analyze and recommend improvements to equipment and facilities, as needed.
• Perform other related duties as requested.

• High school graduate or GED.
• Demonstrated ability to read simple instructions.

• Knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of common methods, materials and equipment used in traffic control and pedestrian safety.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers and the public and to deal with service problems courteously and tactfully.
• Skill in the use of the tools and equipment listed below.

Safety equipment, safety vests, and hand‑held stop sign.

Work requires considerable physical exertion involving long periods of standing and walking. Required lifting up to 10 lbs frequently; lifting 11‑25 lbs occasionally; carrying up to 10 lbs occasionally; other requirements include standing and walking frequently, twisting, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, and running occasionally.

Outdoors in varying weather conditions, temperature, or odors, including automotive exhaust fumes.
