The State of New Hampshire, the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Division of Forest and Lands has a seasonal vacancy for Forest Technician - North Region.
SUMMARYProvides technical and field support to Forest Management Bureau staff in the North Region, assisting with the planning, implementation, and monitoring of forest management activities on state-owned lands. Performs work in the office and field, including in remote locations.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Supports forest sampling activities as part of the state land inventory program. Locates sample points by compass, tape, and GPS and samples trees with forestry tools such as prisms and angle gauges.
- Measures standing timber and takes tree stand measurements as required for technical forestry needs.
- Records existing vegetation, wildlife signs, and other pertinent information and prepares basic summaries and reports to assist professional and technical forest management staff.
- Interprets aerial photo, geodetic and forest-type maps and constructs field maps for management and protection purposes.
- Enters, manages, and maintains field data in computer programs.
- Assists in marking and tallying trees in preparation for timber sales.
- Performs trail and access road maintenance using a variety of equipment and tools such as chainsaws, hammers, saws, lawn mowers, and other power equipment.
- Conducts boundary line maintenance activities on state forest lands.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- Education/
Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent credential. - License/Certification:
Valid driver's license. - Other Requirements:
Must be able to walk long distances on rough terrain. Position requires personal vehicle use with eligibility for reimbursement at the standard mileage rate.
Knowledge of maps, compass, GPS/GIS and other forest measurement tools. Working knowledge of basic forest management practices and procedures and silviculture. Experience carrying out oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with personnel and other employees.
