ResponsibilitiesRecreation Youth Counselor II:
Provide a safe and secure environment for adjudicated or detained juveniles. Coordinate and supervise residents’ daily activities; monitor and assess behavior to ensure safety. Participate as a member of the Treatment Team to develop and implement individual treatment plans; assist Youth Counselor IIIs in providing group and individual counseling. Uphold the agency’s vision and mission through the Practice Model theories, beliefs, and principles in daily practice.
Recreation Youth Counselor III:
Provide a safe and secure environment for adjudicated or detained juveniles. Coordinate and supervise residents’ daily activities; monitor and assess behavior to ensure safety. Participate as a member of the Treatment Team to develop and implement individual treatment plans and conduct group and individual resident counseling. Supervise subordinate Youth Counselors. Uphold the agency’s vision and mission through the Practice Model theories, beliefs, and principles in daily practice.
Common duties for both levels include:
- Maintain constant surveillance to ensure safety; inspect living areas for contraband; protect resident possessions.
- Handle potentially volatile situations and, when necessary, physically restrain residents within agency guidelines.
- Organize and supervise daily recreational, motivational, and educational activities; document behavior and responses to medications when applicable.
- Develop and implement treatment plans; conduct individual and family counseling as directed; collaborate with the treatment team.
- Communicate professionally with court officials, families, medical and clinical personnel, law enforcement, and residents; adapt communication for individuals with cognitive impairments.
- Develop and maintain case records, including treatment plans, PPRs, reports, daily notes, and other permanent records.
- Supervise off-site activities and incidents; perform safety-related accountabilities and participate in crisis response as needed.
Recreation Youth Counselor II:
Education/Experience – Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after high school. License/Certification – Valid driver’s license. Physical requirements – Must be able to run, physically restrain youth, and lift up to 50 lbs. Must successfully complete a mandatory physical fitness evaluation prior to employment. Trainee option:

Preferred Qualifications:
Education and experience in sociology, psychology, human services, behavioral science, social work, education, liberal studies, theology, or criminal justice are preferred. Experience with organized group activities is preferred.
Recreation Youth Counselor III:
Education/Experience – Equivalent combination of 2.5 years of education and experience after high school, with relevant fields and group leadership experience. License/Certification – Valid driver’s license. Other requirements: ability to run, restrain youths, lift up to 50 lbs; mandatory physical fitness evaluation prior to employment. Trainee option:

Must successfully complete the Juvenile Justice Academy within twelve months of employment as a 21-1010 Counselors-2 (Youth Counselor II) or 21-1010 Counselors-3 (Youth Counselor III), as applicable.
