The Tax Senior Advisor is responsible for managing complex tax engagements, reviewing work prepared by junior staff, providing high-level technical expertise, and serving as a key client contact. This role requires strong analytical ability, advanced knowledge of federal and state taxation, and the ability to lead multiple engagements simultaneously in a fast-paced public accounting environment.
Key Responsibilities 1. Engagement Management- Plan, coordinate, and execute complex tax engagements for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and trusts.
- Review tax returns prepared by staff for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable tax laws.
- Monitor project timelines and budgets to ensure efficient engagement delivery.
- Research complex tax issues and prepare well-documented technical memos.
- Stay current on changes in federal, state, and local tax law.
- Identify tax planning opportunities and communicate recommendations to managers and partners.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients; respond to questions, provide status updates, and resolve issues promptly.
- Develop strong client relationships by delivering high-quality service and proactive communication.
- Participate in client meetings and assist in presenting planning strategies and compliance findings.
- Supervise, coach, and mentor staff accountants and tax associates.
- Provide feedback on performance and assist in staff development and training.
- Delegate work effectively and ensure staff are properly supported.
- Ensure all work complies with firm policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with internal quality control procedures and participate in peer reviews when applicable.
- Maintain organized work papers and documentation in accordance with firm protocols.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- Master’s in Taxation (MST) or Accounting preferred.
- CPA license required or actively pursuing.
- 3–5+ years of progressive tax experience in a public accounting firm.
- Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and local tax codes.
- Experience with tax research tools (CCH, RIA Checkpoint, BNA, etc.).
- Proficiency with tax preparation and workflow software (e.g., Ultra Tax, Pro System fx, GoSystems, Axcess).
- Strong Excel and workpaper documentation skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated leadership and team-development abilities.
